The Pattern
Say hello to the Faux Brioche Beanie: a stunning crochet beanie with a knit-style brioche look!
This pattern features an easy-to-memorize 2-round repeat, delivering seamless colorwork magic using just one color at a time. The stitch pattern uses waistcoat stitches and chain spaces worked in alternated colors to create the vertical striping effect.
Get ready to fall in love with the modified waistcoat stitch with this stylish, warm, and versatile project that you’ll love making and wearing!
The Faux Brioche Beanie is worked seamlessly in the round from the top down, entirely on the right side. You start at the center of the crown and increase your way outward until you reach the final beanie circumference, at which point you continue working the pattern with no increases until the beanie reaches your desired length. Each round is closed using the invisible join method, which creates a hidden seam at the back of the hat.
This pattern was originally published as part of Hobbii’s 2025 Crochet Advent, A Winter’s Tale. It is now available in my usual pattern layout through my webshop or Ravelry.
The pattern is also available as a Hobbii Plus pattern, formatted in Hobbii’s pattern template, and it’s available in a bunch of languages including German, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, and Dutch.

Measurements
This beanie will fit a head circumference of 19–23 inches or 48–58 cm. The finished measurements are taken with the beanie laid flat, after blocking.
Width: 10 inches or 25 cm
Length: 8 inches or 20 cm
Materials
Yarn
Aran weight.
Fiber
For a beanie that transitions effortlessly between the chill of early spring and autumn and the deep cold of winter, a lightweight wool or wool-blend yarn strikes the perfect balance: warm enough when the temperature drops, but not so heavy that it becomes uncomfortable on a milder day.
Two, highly contrasting colors will give the brioche effect maximum visual impact, while a more tonal pairing will soften the look for something elegant and subtle.
Notions
Scissors, yarn needle, tape measure.
Hooks
US L-11/8.0 mm (main gauge) hook, US J-10/6.0 mm (detailing) hook, or sizes needed to obtain gauge. I’m a tight crocheter, so you may have to go down in hook sizes.
Yardage
1 ball or approximately 109 yds/100 m of each of the two colors.
