The Pattern

Introducing the Granny Mirage Top: a chic summer top that holds an unexpected secret! With its delicate bow-tied straps, this crop top is cute as a button and you would be forgiven for thinking that it’s made out of perfectly aligned granny squares all neatly seamed together along the edges. But here’s the twist—this top is actually constructed as one seamless panel! Even the straps are embedded into the construction for extra durability.

Designed with versatility in mind, the top allows you to tailor the fit to your liking: simply tie the straps lower or higher to adjust its position on your body. The lace-up closure lets you tighten or loosen the bust to suit your comfort and style. Wear it with the lace at the back or at the front, or omit it altogether and substitute it with a simple seam!

Measurements

Finished bust circumference: 31 (35.25, 39.75, 44, 48.25) (52.75, 57, 61.5, 65.75) inches or 79 (90, 101, 112, 123) (134, 145, 156, 167) cm

The sizing for this pattern is based on the standard Craft Yarn Council (CYC) measurements.

This top is designed to be worn with up to 4 inches (10 cm) of negative ease around the bust.

All my garment patterns are size-inclusive and are graded for actual bust circumferences of up to at least a 60 inches or 152 cm.

Materials

Yarn

Sport weight.

Fiber

The original sample was made in a fine merino wool, which gives the finished top a beautiful drape and excellent stitch definition that keeps the granny square illusion sharp and convincing.

If you opt for wool, choose a fine, superwash-treated yarn that can be machine washed and worn comfortably next to the skin.

For a lighter, more breathable alternative suited to warmer weather, a smooth cotton or cotton-bamboo blend works beautifully, offering a crisp stitch definition and a fluid drape that suits the delicate aesthetic of the design.

Whatever fiber you choose, avoid anything too loosely spun or textured, as clean, well-defined stitches are what make the seamless construction so effective.

Pam (Pamietansc on Ravelry)

Size 1, using 346 yds of locally sourced cotton yarn as MC and 246 yds of locally sourced cotton yarn as CC
Hook size(s): 3.0 mm; 3.5 mm; 4.0 mm
Mods: After the edging, I seamed right away using flat surface st without making the 2 rounds of border. My straps for front vs back are not symmetrically placed with the back straps about 1″ more inwards as most bras are positioned as such too. I also used stacked SC instead of CHs for the beginning DC.

Michelle (MishRynk on Ravelry)

Size 4, using 620 yds of Hobbii friends as MC and 445 yds of Hobbii friends as CC
Hook size(s): 3.75 mm
Mods: None.

Yvonne (evony75 on Ravelry)

Size 4, using 623 yds of Hobbii Twister as MC and 360 yds of Hobbii Twister Solid as CC
Hook size(s): 3.0 mm; 3.5 mm; 4.0 mm
Mods: I did not use the corset closure and opted to slip stitch the two sides together.

Novei (noveimc on Ravelry)

Size 3, using 476 yds of DMC Wooly as MC and 355 yds of DMC Wooly as CC
Hook size(s): 4.0 mm
Mods: I didn’t make the “corset” version and I plan to enlarge the straps.

Filipa (pipacpuna on Ravelry)

Size 2, using 588 yds of Circulo Clea Duplo as MC and 425 yds of Circulo Clea Duplo as CC
Hook size(s): 3.5 mm
Mods: None.

Adinda (Javabel on Ravelry)

Size 2, using 455 yds of Hobbii Friends Cotton 8/4 Solids as MC and 303 yds of Hobbii Black Friday Cotton 8/4 as CC
Hook size(s): 2.5 mm; 3.0 mm
Mods: Only made half the recommended length for the string because I only close the top part of the garment (due to pregnant belly). I used the same hook size for secondary and detailing hooks as it was very difficult to use smaller than that for detailing purpose.

Tracy (tmg1980 on Ravelry)

Size 1, using 406 yds of Yarnart Jeans as MC and 290 yds of Yarnart Jeans as CC
Hook size(s): 3.25 mm
Mods: None.

Alex (figgies on Ravelry)

Size 3, using 567 yds of Hobbii 8/4 cotton as MC and 334 yds of Yarnart Flowers Rosegarden as CC
Hook size(s): 3.5 mm; 3.25 mm
Mods: None.

Hannah (Fenny-42 on Ravelry)

Size 2, using 500 yds of Dark Lake Fiber Art Yak and Merino Sock/Fingering in Natural Gray as MC and 360 yds of Comma Chameleon Yarn Co OOAK BFG sock as CC
Hook size(s): 3.5 mm; 4.0 mm; 3.125 mm
Mods: I used two different yarns that were both “fingering” weight but acted more like fingering (MC) and sport (CC), so I used a 4.0 mm hook for MC and a 3.5 mm hook for CC to match gauge.

Karina (Karinskinen on Ravelry)

Size 2, using 180 yds of Hobbii Friends Extra Fine Merino as MC and 180 yds of Hobbii Friends Extra Fine Merino as CC
Hook size(s): 3.0 mm; 3.5 mm; 4.0 mm
Mods: None.

Molly2 (MollyLe on Ravelry)

Size 3, using 630 yds of Kristy’s Fiber Arts Deuce Sport as MC and 433 yds of Kristy’s Fiber Arts Coulter Pine Sport as CC
Hook size(s): 3.0 mm; 3.5 mm; 4.0 mm
Mods: None.

Annalisa (AnnalisaP on Ravelry)

Size 1, using 390 yds of Hobbii Friends Wheel as MC and 325 yds of Laines Du Nord Sfumature as CC
Hook size(s): 3.0 mm; 3.5 mm; 4.0 mm
Mods: I put buttons instead of the corset-like closing, so I only made the eyelets on one side and I didn’t make the string.

Natalia (natydfo on Ravelry)

Size 1, using 385 yds of Drops Safran in color 64 as MC and 273 yds of Drops Safran in color 67 as CC
Hook size(s): 3.0 mm; 3.5 mm; 4.0 mm
Mods: None.
