The Pattern

Bring a little Halloween magic into your kitchen with this set of three interlocking crochet panels featuring the Plumpy Pumpkin, the Googly Ghost, and the Wobbly Wizard Hat!
These thick, durable panels work up quickly and make for a fun seasonal project that is as practical as it is charming. Use them as potholders, mug rugs, or simply as a festive addition to your fall décor.
They are shown here in fingering weight yarn, but any yarn work will beautifully with these patterns. Simply adjust your hook size to achieve a dense, gap-free fabric, and keep in mind that your finished measurements and yardage will vary accordingly.

This pattern includes stitch charts and row-by-row written instructions for each of the three designs, making them a great next project if you are already familiar with the basics of interlocking crochet.

New to the technique? My book, Interlocking Crochet, covers everything you need to know from start to finish, with detailed step-by-step photos to introduce you to the technique, and a directory of 50 reversible stitch patterns and five project patterns to explore.

Available online and at bookstores worldwide.

Please note that the Creepy Cute Potholders are not included in the book.

Difficulty

Required Skills

These patterns provide stitch charts, as well as row-by-row written instructions and basic information such as a brief overview on the special interlocking stitches, but they do assume you already know the basics of interlocking crochet.

Measurements

After blocking, one potholder measures approximately 6.25 inches (16 cm) across, including the border.

Materials

Yarn
The samples are shown in fingering weight yarn, but any yarn weight will work great with this pattern. Remember to pick an appropriate hook size: the goal is to create a dense enough fabric so that there are no discernible gaps you can peek through. If using a different yarn weight and hook size than the pattern suggests, your finished measurements and yardage will vary.

Shown in

Hobbii Friends Cotton 8/4 (100% Cotton, 174 yds/160 m per 1.75 oz/50 g skein) in 35 Coral, 94 Turquoise, and 64 Nightshade as main colors, and 123 Charcoal as the contrast color.

Hooks

US C-2/2.75 mm (main gauge) hook and US B-1/2.25 mm (secondary) hook, or sizes needed to obtain gauge. I’m a tight crocheter, so you may have to go down in hook sizes.

Notions

Scissors, yarn needle, locking stitch marker.

Yardage

Main color (background color on the RS): 50 yds / 46 m of any fingering-weight yarn.

Contrast color (shape outline on the RS): 35 yds / 32 m of any fingering-weight yarn.

These yardages are estimated. Scroll down for the tester lookbook with exact yardages from my testers!

If you’re curious how these patterns work out when made by a left-handed crocheter, you’re in luck! Yvonne (@crochet_by_evony on Instagram) is one of my amazing left-handed testers who kindly sent me this fabulous picture of the potholders she made. When worked up left-handedly, the image on the graph shows up mirrored, and I think this is simply magical 😍

I’d LOVE to see your work, so be sure to tag me @CrochetHighway on Instagram and use the #CrochetHighway hashtag for a chance to be featured on my stories!

A word from my testers

Thank you again for letting me test! These potholders were such a fun project and I’m excited to use them this spooky season (but I’ll probably end up using them year round haha).

Absolutely enjoyed making this one!! Definitely my favourite one!! I must admit I used the written instructions more as I could follow them more easily than the chart.
