The Pattern

The Stained Glass Jumper reimagines one of crochet’s most iconic stitches, the granny stitch, in a way that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly modern. Layers of color and texture form a reversible fabric full of movement and depth: on one side, a crisp mesh overlay creates a grid of “stained glass” panes; on the other, the familiar granny clusters shine through in shifting tones.

This pattern comes with two style options: a long-sleeved jumper for cooler months and a short-sleeved tee for warmer weather. You choose which one to make!

The construction is simple, the fabric beautifully drapey, and the process surprisingly intuitive once you get into the rhythm. It’s a project that celebrates color, comfort, and versatility in equal measure.

And if you can’t get enough of the effect, don’t miss the matching Stained Glass Scarf for a perfectly coordinated finish.

Size 5, using 1430 yds of Malabrigo Sock as MC, and 1188 yds of Malabrigo Sock as CC
Hook size(s): 2.5 mm; 2.25 mm
Mods: None.

Jessie (Dondelingdingdong on Ravelry)

Size 8, using 2001 yds of Hobbii Friends Cotton 8/4 as MC, and 1793 yds of Hobbii Friends Cotton 8/4 as CC

Size 4, using 2058 yds of locally sourced mercerized Cotton yarn as MC, and 2020 yds of Yarns by Angel Fine Cotton Forest as CC
Hook size(s): 2.5 mm
Mods: Math, none. Steps, a bit. After doing the underarm side panel, and then doing the ribbed hem, I did the same for the sleeves. After doing it, I ribbed it afterwards. It is easier to maneuver the project doing the little pieces first and then combining them all after.

Size 3, using 1127.5 yds of Long Dog Yarn Merino Sock as MC, and 840 yds of Long Dog Yarn Merino Sock as CC
Hook size(s): 3 mm; 3.5 mm
Mods: I sized up my hook for the sleeve ribbing. Also, I did make use of the sleeve modification instructions to add 4 rows to my sleeves because I realized I needed it to make my color blocking line up the way I wanted it to and I didn’t want to go back and undo all the work on my sleeve (and standard sleeve lengths usually seem a bit too short to me anyway). And per the sleeve modification directions I also added 2 rows to the sleeve underarm panels.

Maddie (maddieb17 on Ravelry)

Size 3, using 1420 yds of Big Twist Baby Bunny as MC, and 1395.66 yds of Big Twist Baby Bunny as CC
Hook size(s): 3.25 mm
Mods: I added four rows to the colorwork panel for the arms and added 7 rows to the underarm panels. I thought I needed the sleeves a bit longer. I probably would have been fine with them the way they were, but I do like how it looks.

Hook size(s): 2.75 mm
Mods: I added one pattern repeat to the arms to add an extra inch of length as it was too short for me. I also did 3 SLST on every 3rd row of the neck ribbing to make it slightly tighter.

Narelle (Nlb64 on Ravelry)

Size 6, using 1640 yds of Bendigo Woollen Mills Classic 3 ply and Bendigo Woollen Mills as MC, and 1395 yds of Bendigo Woollen Mills Classic 3 ply and Bendigo Woollen Mills Multicoloured Sock Yarn as CC

Size 8, using 1701 yds of Miss Babbs in Livid as MC, and 2855 yds of Studio June Yarns in Here Comes Trouble as CC
Hook size(s): 3 mm
Mods: I made the ribbing separately, then seamed it on using the mattress stitch. in the pattern where it says slip stitch in “x” number of stitches I would go through the same hole on the ribbing that many times while attaching to the body/sleeve/neckline through the same number of SC.
