The Pattern
The Steppingstone Chevron Shawl combines two different stitch patterns from the book and alternates them to create a brand-new chevron design.
I designed it with a gradient yarn cake in mind, paired with a highly contrasting color, which allows for the subtle hue shifts to create seamless color transitions. This being said, if gradient yarn cakes aren’t your thing, it also looks gorgeous as a two-toned shawl!
The changing direction of the diagonals adds an optical illusion effect where the design changes depending on the angle it is viewed from, making it seem like many different stitch patterns have been used throughout.
Designed as a generously sized rectangular shawl, it drapes beautifully in lightweight cotton—silky smooth and effortlessly elegant to wear.

This shawl pattern is written for one size, but it can be easily customized to fit your desired measurements. Simply start with a smaller/larger number of stitches to change the width, and then keep crocheting until you reach your desired length!

Feel free to experiment with different yarn weights! Depending on your yarn type, your finished measurements and yardage will vary.
Fiber
A smooth, lightweight cotton or cotton blend is the natural starting point for this shawl, offering the drape and breathability that suit a generously sized rectangular wrap so well. Cotton also tends to showcase the interlocking stitch pattern with a clean, crisp clarity that lets the chevron design and optical illusion effect read beautifully.
That said, this shawl is a wonderful candidate for experimentation.
A bamboo or bamboo-blend yarn will add a silky sheen and even more fluid drape, while a linen or cotton-linen blend brings a relaxed, effortless quality that softens beautifully over time.
If you prefer something with a little more warmth, a lightweight wool or alpaca-blend works just as well, making the shawl a year-round piece rather than strictly a warm-weather one.
Whatever fiber you choose, keep in mind that your yarn weight will affect your finished measurements and yardage. It’s always a good idea to swatch before you begin!
