The Bavarian stitch uses a combination of basic crochet stitches to create an outstanding effect similar to mosaic tiles. This pattern might look complicated at first but trust me, after you complete rounds 1-4, you’ll understand how it works – we add an increase every other round in between the corners, just like a regular square!
In this tutorial, I included step-by-step pictures for each round to help you better visualise the stitches.
Important notes:
Change colors every 2nd round (always work rounds 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 etc. in the same color)
Throughout the pattern, the color changes will be in the same place every time (between the 4th and 5th stitch of any corner cluster of 12 TR).
The corners of the square will always consist of a cluster of 12 TR stitches, while the clusters on the side will always consist of 8 TR stitches.
Stitches and abbreviations (US standard terminology):
MR = magic ring
CH = chain
SC = single crochet
SL ST = slip stitch
YO = yarn over
TR = treble crochet
TR4TOG = 4 treble crochet stitches together (*YO and insert hook through indicated space, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops on the hook. Repeat from * 3 more times. YO and pull through all 5 loops on the hook)
TR8TOG = 8 treble crochet stitches together (*YO and insert hook through indicated space, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops on the hook. Repeat from * 7 more times. YO and pull through all 9 loops on the hook)
BPTR4TOG = 4 treble crochet stitches together worked around the post of the stitch indicated (inserting your hook from the back to the front of the post)
BPTR8TOG = 8 treble crochet stitches together worked around the post of the stitch indicated (inserting your hook from the back to the front of the post)
I used Scheepjes Softfun cotton & acrylic blend yarn in the following colours:
Red – Jam
Yellow – Bumblebee
Blue – Cobalt
Note: You can use any yarn you like or have available, but keep in mind that the size of the finished object will differ. Always use a hook-size adequate for the yarn. Keep in mind that this pattern requires a tighter tension, so you may want to increase the hook size if your crochet is on the looser side.
Gauge: after completing round 4, your square should measure approx. 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inch)
Size of finished object:
Trivet: approx. 30×30 cm (12×12”)
Coaster: approx. 15×15 cm (6×6”)

Coaster
Each coaster consists of 6 rounds. Start with a magic ring.
Round 1 (color A): *1 SC in MR, CH 3, TR4TOG in MR, CH 5. Repeat from * 3 more times. Join with SL ST to beginning SC.
Round 2 (color A): CH 2, 12 TR in the top of next TR4TOG, CH 2. *SL ST in the next SC. CH 2, 12 TR in the top of next TR4TOG, CH 2. Repeat from * 2 more times. Join with a SL ST in the beginning SL ST.
Fasten off color A.
Join color B in the space between the 4th and 5th TR of any 12 TR cluster.
Round 3 (color B): *CH 3, BPTR4TOG over the next 4 STS, CH 5, SL ST in the next space (between the 8th and 9th TR). CH 3, BPTR8TOG over the next 8 STS, CH 5, SL ST in the next space. Repeat from * 2 more times. CH 3, BPTR4TOG over the next 4 STS, CH 5, SL ST in the next space. CH 3, BPTR8TOG over the next 8 STS, CH 5. Join with SL ST in the same space where you started the round.
We have now created a space (TR8TOG) for an additional Bavarian circle (8 TR) to go into in the next even-numbered round (as seen in picture 5 above). With every odd-numbered round we work, an additional space will be created, which will then be occupied by a Bavarian circle on the following round, thus creating an increase every other round. Keep going in this way and create a Bavarian square of your desired size!
Round 4 (color B): *CH 2, 12 TR in the top of next TR4TOG, CH 2, SL ST in the next SL ST. CH 2, 8 TR in the top of the next TR8TOG, CH 2, SL ST in the next SL ST. Repeat from * 2 more times. CH 2, 12 TR in the top of next TR4TOG, CH 2, SL ST in the next SL ST. CH 2, 8 TR in the top of the next TR8TOG, CH 2. Join with a SL ST in the beginning SL ST.
Fasten off color B.
Join color C in the space between the 4th and 5th TR of any 12 TR cluster.
Round 5 (color C): *CH 3, BPTR4TOG over the next 4 STS, CH 5, SL ST in the next space. [CH 3, BPTR8TOG over the next 8 STS, CH 5, SL ST in the next space]twice. Repeat from * 2 more times. CH 3, BPTR4TOG over the next 4 STS, CH 5, SL ST in the next space. CH 3, BPTR8TOG over the next 8 STS, CH 5, SL ST in the next space. CH 3, BPTR8TOG over the next 8 STS, CH 5. Join with SL ST in the same space where you started the round.
Round 6 (color C): *CH 2, 12 TR in the top of next TR4TOG, CH 2, SL ST in the next SL ST. [CH, 8 TR in the top of the next TR8TOG, CH 2, SL ST in the next SL ST] twice. Repeat from * 2 more times. CH 2, 12 TR in the top of next TR4TOG, CH 2, SL ST in the next SL ST. CH, 8 TR in the top of the next TR8TOG, CH 2, SL ST in the next SL ST. CH, 8 TR in the top of the next TR8TOG, CH 2. Join with a SL ST in the beginning SL ST.
Fasten off and weave in all ends. Congratulations, you’re all set for your first coaster! Now it’s time to make some more for a complete set
Trivet
The trivet is composed of 12 Bavarian rounds, plus the edging. It is worked exactly like the coasters, with the following changes in the color sequence:
Work rounds 1-4 with color A.
Work rounds 5-8 with color B.
Work rounds 9-12 with color C.
After finishing round 12, fasten off color C and join color A in the back loop of the 6th TR stitch on any corner. Work BLO SC in each stitch around. CH 15 to create the hanger and join in the same stitch as the beginning join. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
