The Steppingstone Pumpkin

The Steppingstone Pumpkin is an interlocking crochet pattern featuring an easy-to-memorize pattern repeat and a straightforward tubular construction. The aim is to introduce you to the interlocking crochet technique – this pattern can quite literally be your steppingstone into the technique!

The pattern comes in 3 sizes, with the step-by-step tutorial being presented in the gauge swatch directions. The best part about it? The gauge swatch is designed to be used as your very first pumpkin, although you’ll probably want to make a whole pumpkin patch!

Shop the Steppingstone Collection

The Steppingstone collection is a series of interlocking crochet patterns for garments, accessories, and home decor specifically designed to go perfectly together. Their aim is to introduce you to the interlocking crochet, or, in other words, to be your steppingstone into this amazing technique!

Yarn Ideas

This pumpkin can be made with whichever yarn you want, but why not take a look at these tried & tested yarns from my testers? In this list you’ll find yarns that my testers used and loved. To see the results, scroll down to the tester lookbook and start browsing for inspiration!

Materials and yardage

Yarn: You can use whatever yarn you want and this pumpkin will look fabulous! Just make sure you pick an appropriate hook size to go with your chosen yarn.

For my pumpkins I used We Are Knitters The Mixed Yarn (50% wool, 50% cotton, 273 yds / 250 m per 100 g skein) in “Natural” as MC and “Wine” as CC.

Hooks: I used my 4.0 mm Clover Amour hooks.

Notions: Scissors, darning needle, stitch marker, fiberfill, cinnamon sticks.

Yardage

Main color (off white): 30 (70, 105) yds / 25 (65, 95) m

Contrast color:25 (60, 85) yds / 25 (55, 80) m

A word from my testers

I still consider myself a baby crocheter compared to all the wonderfully talented creators out there. I like to challenge myself and I am constantly learning new techniques as I try out different patterns. That being said, I will admit that I was intimidated at first glance at these pumpkins due to how detailed, unique, and creative they are. However, as I mentioned, I like a challenge 🙂 Once I completed the test gauge, I was able to pick up on the pattern very quickly. This is one of those patterns where I could put my baby down for a nap, plop myself in front of the TV with my yarn and hook, and have a finished pumpkin by the time my baby wakes up. It is MUCH easier than it looks, and that's honestly what I love about it!

I had an absolute blast making this pumpkin. The pattern was very well written and easy to follow. The pictures included provided additional help with the yarn placement for each of the rounds/repeat rows. Having them available made this a pumpkin pattern I would highly recommend for anyone who wants to make a unique pumpkin for their Fall pumpkin patches!

Such a cute and easy lil pumpkin pattern. So many colour options and straying away from a traditional look with this quirky stepping stone design. Love it!!

This is a fun and quick make. And the end result is just too cute.
